We love having people volunteer with us!
Diversity ACT is a member of Volunteering ACT and abides by the rights & responsibilities of our volunteers, Volunteering ACT & Volunteering Australia.
We provide volunteer training and also encourage volunteers to undertake, where possible, the training provided for volunteers by Volunteering ACT.
Because of our work, all volunteers and committee members are required to undertake ACT Working With Vulnerable People (WWVP) checks and must provide copies of their WWVP card.
There are many ways you can volunteer with us!
- Want to develop your knowledge of how management committees and NFP organisations work? You can choose to volunteer as a member of one of our sub-committees.
- How are your gardening skills? The grounds of the Diversity Hub contain multiple gardens in need of care, and the lawn needs regular mowing. We are looking for people to take care of the garden, and recruit and manage the gardening team.
- Don’t want to commit to something regular, but keen to contribute when you can? There’s always a roster that needs filling for an hour somewhere!
To start volunteering with us, fill out the Volunteer application form at the bottom of this page, or get in touch to discuss how you can help!
Once you’ve submitted your volunteer application form, we will send you login details so you can do our Volunteer onboarding training.
Join a subcommittee
Are you thinking of getting involved in management committees or boards later in life, but not sure where to start? Or maybe you just want to contribute more to your community? Consider a position on a subcommittee with Diversity ACT!
Research both in Australia and internationally shows time and again that boards, whether that’s for a corporate organisation or not-for-profit, benefit from diverse views. Yet still so many are filled with privileged white men who have no idea about the needs of the vast majority of the population.
And sadly there are still too few opportunities for people from diverse backgrounds to gain the required skills and knowledge to apply for board positions.
At Diversity ACT, we can make our contribution to improving diversity in management boards by inviting people from diverse backgrounds to be part of a subcommittee. These volunteer positions do not have the legal obligations of being on our management committee, but will expose you to how boards and management committees are run, and give you valuable experience you can use in your career.
We currently have positions available on the following subcommittees:
- Policy and governance: No need for particular policy experience, but an analytical, detail-oriented personality preferred. Great opportunity for professional development that will contribute to a range of careers! Find out more.
- Finance and fundraising: Got a brain for numbers, or for convincing people to give money to charity? This is the subcommittee for you. Find out more.
- Events and outreach: Help us organise events and support even more people in South Canberra!
- Communication: Looking for people with communication skills, from the strategic thinking through to social media, writing newsletters, and graphic design. Find out more.
- Education and training: Want to help us educate people on the need for diversity and support for LGBTQIA+ people? Or maybe you have connections into schools?
- Research and analysis: Get into the nitty gritty details to support our submissions to government and guide our work. Find out more.
- Health and wellbeing: Encourage healthy practices within our community.
- Property management: Help us keep the Diversity Hub well maintained for all to enjoy! A great subcommittee option for people who are handy around the house and yard, or who have an interest in workplace health and safety.
You must be a member of Diversity ACT to be on our subcommittees.
To apply for one of these roles, email info@diversityact.org.au with a paragraph about why you want to join a particular subcommittee and what you will bring. Preference will be given to people who bring a form of diversity not currently represented in the existing subcommittee membership.
